Emergency Mancamp Rental: How to Get a Crew Housed and Fed Fast

When a permanent camp, hotel block or kitchen is not available, an emergency mancamp puts sleeping, food service and sanitation on the site itself. This guide covers what goes into one and what to settle before you request a quote.

What an emergency mancamp is

An emergency mancamp is a temporary, self-contained workforce facility set up on short notice. Crews use one after a storm, flood or wildfire, during utility restoration, at the start of a remote construction job, or when a plant shutdown brings in more workers than local lodging can hold.

The core of a camp is sleeping space, food service and sanitation. Most packages combine bunkbed sleeper trailers or modular sleeper containers, mobile kitchens with dishwashing and refrigeration, restroom and shower trailers, handwashing stations and laundry.

Decide these seven things before you call

  1. Peak headcount, not average headcount. Size sleeping, toilets and showers for the most people on site at once.
  2. Start date, and how long you expect to stay. A firm end date and an open-ended one are quoted differently.
  3. Site address and access: road condition, gate width, turning room for a long trailer, and whether the ground is level and firm.
  4. Utilities on site: power, potable water and sewer or a holding-tank plan. Say what is missing as well as what is there.
  5. Who prepares meals: your crew, a catering contractor, or both. This decides the kitchen size and the dishwashing capacity.
  6. Accessibility needs. Ask for an ADA shower and restroom configuration if anyone on the crew needs one.
  7. Permits and approvals your site or jurisdiction requires for temporary housing, water and wastewater.

Build the package in a sensible order

Sleeping space and sanitation are the hardest functions to improvise, so most crews settle those first: bunkbed or sleeper units, then restroom and shower capacity. The kitchen, dishwashing and refrigeration follow, then laundry.

A single request that lists every function lets the rental team check how the pieces fit together on your footprint, rather than adding trailers one at a time.

Questions to ask any provider

  • Which units are available for my dates, and what is the delivery window?
  • Who delivers, sets up and connects utilities, and what do I need to have ready?
  • What is included in the rate: generators, water, fuel, pump-out and cleaning service?
  • How often is the camp serviced, and who do I call after hours?
  • What does the written quote show, and what could change the price?

What commonly slows a camp down

Delays usually come from the site rather than the equipment: soft or sloped ground, a tight access road, no power or water at the pad, or a permit that has not been filed. Water withdrawal and wastewater discharge approvals in particular can take time, so start them early and confirm requirements with your local authority.
